How it works
Both are decided in about 3 weeks from outside the UK. Only one of them leads to indefinite leave.
You need an endorsement from an approved body, or an eligible prize, before the visa application. The visa runs up to 5 years at a time and can be extended; settlement comes after 3 or 5 years depending on the field and endorsement type.
Partner and children can come with you.
The HPI visa runs 2 years, or 3 for PhD holders, and cannot be extended. Time on it does not count towards indefinite leave, but you can switch to another route from inside the UK.
The degree must be from an eligible top university and less than 5 years old. There is an annual cap; the year runs from 1 November to 31 October.
